In 1842, Rome created the Diocese of Adelaide. In 1887, a new diocese was established to cover the north of South Australia and Adelaide became the metropolitan see of a new ecclesiastical province. Adelaide's fourth bishop, Bishop Christopher Reynolds, thus became its first archbishop. Archbishop Philip Wilson currently presides over the Archdiocese of Adelaide, which covers an area of 105,000 sq km in the south of the state.
