TIME TO NOMINATE FOR MEDIA AWARDS

The Adelaide Archdiocese is calling for nominations for the 2018 Catholic Archbishop of Adelaide Media Citations.

The awards are highly regarded for their recognition of professional excellence and a commitment to truth, balance, fairness and community service. They are not intended to focus on publicity given to the Catholic Church or religion generally.

“The media plays a vital role in contemporary society,” Archbishop Wilson said. “It both reflects and shapes cultural values, while providing for vital community development and education.”

This year’s judging panel includes experienced journalists, editors and communications professionals working in the media industry.

Individuals are able to nominate up to three entries in total. There is no restriction on the number of entries from media outlets. The Mary MacKillop Citation recognises an outstanding contribution to journalism by an individual or group - nominations can be from a third party or the judging panel.

Categories include print – best news story, best series of articles, best feature; visual broadcast (television or online video) – best news item, best feature story; radio – best news coverage of an event, best interview or series of interviews; online/digital media (work that appeared first online) – best news item, best feature/blog; and photographic – best news photo, best feature photo or series of photos.

The work must be locally produced, published or broadcast in period from April 1 2017 to March 31 2018. Nominations close at 5pm on May 9.

They can be posted to Mary Coombe, 39 Wakefield Street Adelaide 5000 (one copy only, preferably a good quality print, PDF, CD or DVD), or emailed as a link or attachment to mcoombe@adelaide.catholic.org.au. An online entry form and criteria are available at http://www.adelaide.catholic.org.au/news-and-events/archbishop-s-media-awards.

Keep an eye on the news

Every day the media industry churns out thousands of words and images as it reports on the current issues and events of the day. With the advent of social media and daily online news bulletins, the dissemination of news has never been wider.

These news reports play a vital part in communicating with, and informing, the public – a strong and independent media industry is an essential element of democracy as we know it today.

The Archbishop’s Media Citations aim to promote fairness, accuracy and truth in reporting – and to build and strengthen the South Australian community.

So what stories have you read, listened to, watched, written or edited lately which you believe to be deserving of consideration for an award?

It might be a thought-provoking video news clip or a piece of investigative journalism, it might be a feature which gives you new insights into an issue or identity, or maybe it’s just a damn good read.

Online nomination

To nominate, you can fill in the registration form  prior to the deadline of May 16, 2017 and we will contact the journalist's employer.  If you are nominating your own work, you can also  fill in the online  registration form or email mcoombe@adelaide.catholic.org.au.

The citations are open to journalists, presenters, writers and producers working in South Australia and servicing a predominantly South Australian audience. Of course work may be part of a national or international publication.
