Living Catholic in the Lenten tradition
As we journey through Lent, Father Anthony Kain from the Office for Worship explains the Catholic Church’s tradition of prayer, penance and almsgiving.
The Roman Catholic tradition about the discipline of Lent is based upon the Gospel of Ash Wednesday where prayer, penance and care of the poor are presented to be lived ‘in secret’.
The Roman Catholic Law about abstinence (no meat) comes from the interpretation of what it is to do penance.
“In these first days of Lent, I invite you to embrace the spirit of this holy season, through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. As we do so, may the Lord accompany us, so that, at the end of Lent, we may worthily celebrate his victory on the cross. God bless all of you abundantly!” Pope Francis, February 2015.
