- 1950 Born in Cessnock, NSW, on 2 October, 1950. Eldest of five children of Joan and John Wilson.
- 1956-62 St. Patrick’s Primary School, Cessnock.
- 1963-68 St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill.
- 1969-71 St Columba’s Seminary, Springwood. Study for Priesthood.
- 1972-75 St Patrick’s Seminary, Manly. Study for Priesthood.
- 1974 Bachelor of Theology, Catholic Institute of Sydney.
- 1975 Ordained to the priesthood for the Maitland Diocese. Appointed Assistant Priest for East Maitland Parish.
- 1977-78 Religious Education studies in New York, USA.
- 1978 Appointed Director of Religious Education, Maitland Diocese.
- 1980 Bishop’s secretary and Master of Ceremonies for the Maitland Diocese.
- 1983 Parish Priest of Maitland.
- 1987 Vicar General, Diocesan Management and Administration.
- 1990 Studied Canon Law in Washington, D.C.
- 1993 Appointed Director of the Tribunal, Maitland Diocese.
- 1994-5 Returned to Washington, D.C. to complete a Canon Law Doctorate.
- 1995 Appointed Prelate of Honour, with the title Monsignor, by the Holy Father.
- 1996 Appointed by the Holy Father to succeed Bishop Murray as Bishop of Wollongong.
- July 10, 1996 Episcopal Ordination at the hands of Cardinal Clancy, BHP Stadium, Unanderra.
- July 14, 1996 Celebrated first Mass as Bishop in St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral, Wollongong.
- December 3, 2001 Installed as Archbishop of Adelaide at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
- December 4, 2001 Celebrated first Mass as Archbishop of Adelaide for staff, in St Patrick’s Church, Grote Street, Adelaide.
- December 9, 2001 First Mass Celebrated in St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral, as Archbishop.
- October 2, 2003 Honorary Doctorate, Doctor of Letters, (honoris causa), conferred at Newcastle University.
- May 2006, Elected President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference for a two-year term.
- 2008 Re-elected President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference for a two-year term.
