Types of Teaching Positions
Teachers employed by Catholic schools are employed to the following types of positions.
Permanent Employee
Hired in a part-time or full-time capacity.
Temporary Employee
May be hired on a temporary basis for a period not exceeding 12 months to:
- fill an unforeseen vacancy pending filling of the position on a permanent basis
- fill a position established on a “trial” basis eg. consequent upon experimental curriculum change
- fill a position sustained by specific purpose qualified funding provided by the government
- provide additional teaching staff for temporary increases in enrolments at the school which occur after the commencement of the school year
Replacement Employee
Hired for a period mutually agreed between the employer and the employee. A replacement employee may be hired to replace an employee absent on approved leave of any kind. However, the replacement employee does not have to fill the position vacated by the employee on leave.
Temporary Relief Teachers (TRT)
Hired to cover short term absences of teachers.
