Values education in Catholic schools

What’s Happening in Values Education?

The National Values Education Project is a DEST funded program to support the development of Values Education in Australian schools. The National Values Education Project is a collaborative project for teachers in schools in the Department of Education and Children’s Services, Catholic Education SA and the Association of Independent Schools SA.

Through this project, a number of Catholic schools have been awarded Values Education cluster grants to further their work in values education. The projects, for terms 2 & 3, highlight the innovative responses developed for furthering the work of values education in these schools.

Values and Studies of Asia

Rostrevor College and Christian Brothers College are aiming to strengthen intercultural and global understandings whilst engaging middle years students with Asia. The project will embed a major study of Asian texts within the mainstream English curriculum at Years 9 & 10.

Values Education and Students Leading Transition

St Brigid’s Catholic School, Xavier College, St Thomas More School and Catherine McAuley are focusing on increasing student involvement and decision-making within their school cluster. They are aspiring to create Student – Adult Partnerships’ where students are able to help direct future school initiatives with a particular focus on transition. It is anticipated that students will review school values, establish commonality and methods for embedding of these across all schools through the transition process and student leadership.

Values Education and Language Learning

Dominican School Semaphore, St Joseph’s Pt Lincoln and St Joseph’s Primary School, Clare have a focus on values education and language learning in their schools. This project will provide for an investigation of the ways in which languages can be valued in and through the curriculum.

Values Education and Cyberbullying

St Mary’s College, St Ignatius College, Rostrevor College and Marymount College has a focus on Values Education and technology and the issues associated with cyberbullying and online safety. The program will be delivered through forums, pastoral care sessions, and teacher and parent workshops.

Values Education- A Shared Responsibility

School of the Nativity, with their campus partner schools, Pilgrim School, Spence Primary School and Heysen Primary School, comprise the Aberfoyle Park Primary School Campus. With School of the Nativity as the lead school, this cross sector project plans to work collaboratively to develop the notion that values education is a shared responsibility between school and families. The four schools will jointly facilitate forums with parents, staff and students with keynote speaker, Michael Grose on courage, optimism and positive thinking.
