Music match made on MySpace

A chance meeting in cyberspace has led to a musical collaboration between an Adelaide schoolgirl and an accomplished international performer at this year’s Fringe Festival.

Talented young artist Siobhán Owen will appear as a special guest singer with Cécile Corbel, a Celtic singer/harpist from Brittany, France, at the Caos Café, Hindley St, on Saturday, March 1.

The 14-year-old connected with Ms Corbel after Siobhán (pictured) started her own music page on popular website MySpace late last year to showcase her classical and Celtic singing talents and network with other musicians of similar tastes.

One of Siobhán’s first MySpace friends was Ms Corbel, who was making plans for her 2008 Australian tour.

“She said she was coming to Adelaide for the Fringe and maybe we could meet up and perhaps sing something together,” says Siobhán, a music scholarship student at St Aloysius’ College and a choral scholarship student at St Francis Xavier’s Cathedral.

“I didn’t expect it to happen, but at the end of January she asked me if I would like to sing at one of her shows.”

The Caos Café show falls on St David’s Day, Patron Saint of Wales, perfect for Siobhán who has Welsh heritage. She will sing one song in Welsh and one Irish song, accompanied by Ms Corbel’s musicians.

“I feel a bit nervous, but excited about meeting Cécile,” says Siobhán, who despite her young age already has an impressive track record as a performer.
